Phone Bills: A Metaphor in Struggle
He had spent 10 years in a corporately designed call center hardly ever reading, and most often being yelled at because someones bill was to high. It was difficult work and it made him forget he had an undergraduate degree, but it put him in touch with peoples struggles. He could hear their pain, see their torn furniture, damaged project apartments, feel their unemployment and listen to their children cough without medicine. A phone bill is quite the metaphor for someones entire situation. Some people never give it a second thought while others spend their whole lives having to worry about it.
